One of the easiest ways to set up a website is through WordPress.com. It’s what I go with for the ‘simple site’ offer on Dinky Little Websites. Once it’s set up there are no on-going costs, and the website owner can rest assured that as their site sits on the WordPress.com servers, amongst literally millions of other websites, all the software will be automatically updated, and the chances of being hacked are virtually nil
I set up a website recently using this option. Very Very Little Wars gives it’s owner the chance to relate “the tales of my experiments and exploits in 6mm Ancient Wargaming.” It’s an aptly named website, as 6mm wargaming figures are very, very small (1/4″ inch in old money!)
When setting up a site on WordPress.com one of the main tasks is to choose a ‘theme’ – the design for your website. WordPress.com offers a range of free themes, and a range of premium ones you have to pay for. After some experimentation we settled for the ‘Oxygen Theme’, as it enables a nice visual presentation of the site content. Through the clever use of a couple of ‘categories’ and ‘sticky posts’, the home page presents some content in a slightly more sophisticated manner than a simple ‘blog roll’.
Categories are used in posts and pages to enable the menus to point to different content, and the default ‘gallery’ options are used to show off some of the many photographs on the site.
The site owner is off and running with his website now – as with any site, the building of the site can be a bit fiddly, but that doesn’t take long – the tricky bit is keeping it up to date!
